Training to become a Private Pilot consists of ground and flight instruction to ensure that you have both the skills and knowledge to be safe in the sky.
Ground instruction. Along with personalized instruction from your CFI, we utilize Cessna Computer Based Instruction (CBI) for ground training. This interactive course will help you learn everything necessary to become a safe and proficient pilot. CBI ensures that you know above and beyond the "minimum standard" required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Flight instruction. Flight training takes place in the air, where you'll gain the skills and experience needed to safely operate an airplane on your own. Your classroom will be the Cessna Skyhawk. It's a joy to fly; in fact, it's the most popular airplane ever made. But make no mistake - this Cessna definitely doesn't have training wheels. The Skyhawk comfortably carries two adults and their luggage at a pulse-quickening 140 mph.
There are several distinct stages on the path to obtaining your certificate.
  • Pre-solo. You will practice basic airwork with your instructor (turns, climbs, descents, slow flight, stalls, etc.) and learn how to takeoff and land the aircraft safely.

  • Solo. After having polished your skills in the basic maneuvers and in takeoffs and landings, the big day will come for your first solo flight. You will complete three takeoffs and landings on your own -- an unforgettable experience for every pilot! You will soon thereafter begin flying solo to nearby practice areas and airports.

  • Cross Country and Night Flight. Once you gain confidence soloing in the local area, you will begin with your instructor the process of learning to navigate on "cross country" flights (to airports more than 50 miles away). Soon you will complete a series of exciting solo cross country flights, while learning with your instructor how to fly at night.

  • Test Prep. There are two evaluations required to obtain your pilot's certificate: the written and practical exams. Our Computer Based (CBI) training will make studying for the written quick and easy. In fact, you will learn all the possible questions published by the FAA before the test! At the same time, you will put the finishing touches on your flying skills, perfecting exciting maneuvers such as steep turns and performance takeoffs and landings.

  • Checkride! Your instructor will set you up with an FAA-examiner, who will ride along with you to see that you are a safe pilot. Upon successful completion of the checkride, you will hold in your hand a "Temporary Airman's Certificate." You are now a pilot!
  • What's required to become a pilot?

  • Am I too young or old to be a pilot? There is no minimum age at which you can begin flight training. However, you must be at least 16 to solo and 17 to obtain your certificate. There is no maximum age.

  • How can I afford it? We offer three financing options from AOPA, Pilot Finance, and Sallie Mae, allowing anyone to earn a pilot's certificate with us.

  • How much flying will I do? You must have at least 35 hours of flight time, which must include 20 hours of dual instruction and 5 hours of solo flight.

  • What else? You must be able to read, speak, and understand English and you must take a periodic FAA medical exam. That's it!

  • How can I get started?

Whether you're certain that flying is something you've always wanted to do, or if still unsure about if it's for you, our recommendation is to experience flight first hand on one of our Discovery Flights.

We offer three different options which vary in length, but one thing is the same -- you will be at the controls in the pilot's seat, and with the help of your instructor, experiencing the exhilaration of being aloft.
